Tattoo Flag Man Strives For World Record

This 67 Year-Old Plans To Get 220 Flags Inked On Himself

I just found a great story about this 67 year-old man from India who says he’s going to get the flag of every country in the world tattooed on himself.  That’s 220 flags and so far he has six.  This guy is so obsessed with getting into the Guinness Book of World records that he changed his first name to Guinness.  Now that’s commitment!  On the surface it sounds like a strange story but the article I found at Telegraph.co.uk explains the mission behind the madness.  Mr. Guinness says “People who have no money wish to do something in their lives, so the poor people try to break records by their strength or their will.”  And it’s this kind of desire and determination that has motivated him to already achieve four certified world bests.  Very impressive Mr. Guinness.  I think the spoiled people of the world, including myself, can learn a thing or two about passion and perseverance from you.  Check out the article here

No Tattoos For Oklahoma Cops

Oklahoma City Bans Visible Ink On Cops

I’m not surprised that some companies are unwilling to hire people with very obvious tattoos.  I’m not saying it’s right, but it’s just not that surprising.  However, when I found a story out of Oklahoma about this type of discrimination against wannabe police officers I was a little perplexed.  The news site Kfor.com tells the story of this guy Jesse Campbell being denied his dream of becoming a cop by the Oklahoma City Police Department because he has visible body art on his arms.  The department has a new policy that bans visible tattoos and forces current cops with ink to cover up.  Campbell argues that if he was allowed to fight in Iraq with them, why shouldn’t he be allowed to serve on the police force in his home country?  A good argument.  If this is about cops looking too intimidating, what’s wrong with that?  I mean, aren’t cops supposed to have a ‘tough guy’ image?  The article claims this policy started when citizens complained about visible tattoos on officers.  Unfortunately, this could backfire when society misses out on potentially great cops.  Check out the entire story here.

Gossip Girl Star Gets Weird Tattoos

Ed Westwick Shows Off Strange Feather Ink

I am a big fan of Gossip Girl and even though I’m a lot older than the kids on that show, I can’t help but get sucked into the outrageously evil stunts they pull on each other.  I’ve even caught my thirty-something boyfriend watching with intrigue…and he’s not afraid to admit that he loves the character Chuck Bass.  In real life Chuck’s name is Ed Westwick and I just found a funny article at SoSoJuicy.com about Ed’s recent body art.  For some reason, he chose to get quite a large tattoo on both his right and left biceps.  One is a large black feather…I’d love to know the significance of that one because it seems like an odd choice.  And the other one is a topless redheaded pin-up girl.  I find it funny that SoSoJuicy.com attributes the girl tattoo to Ed’s response to recent gay rumours.  Gay or not, I’m still a big fan of yours Ed…well, just not of your tattoos.  Check out the entire article here

A Venice Beach Hotel Offers Incentive For Getting Inked

On a recent trip to Venice Beach, I discovered quite a cast of characters roaming the boardwalk.  It’s definitely an eclectic crowd including buskers, weight lifters, musicians, skateboarders, ballers, hippies, and families.  Well, I just found an article at CompareCarHire.co.uk that says a Venice Beach hotel is targeting the tattoo crowd by offering an “Ink and Stay Package”.  This means that guests of the hotel, for the remainder of this year, can receive a $100 voucher to get inked by the in-house artist.  But that’s not all…you also get an ice-pack and lotion for healing, a bottle of tequila to numb the pain, plus a $500 bonus if your tattoo says “I HEART HOTEL ERWIN”.  That’s right, the hotel’s called Hotel Erwin and it’s located right on the beach.  I think this is a great offer for body art lovers who are staying in Venice Beach anyway.  Now, if you chicken out at the tattoo parlor, all is not lost…you will still receive temporary tattoos to save-face.  Check out the entire article here.

Tips For A Great Tattoo Experience

Simple Steps Can Make Your Needle Time Easier

I just found a great article at Examiner.com that gives tips on how to make your trip to the tattoo parlor a little easier and less painful.  Now, I’m sure some of you tough guys out there can handle the pain just fine…what pain, right?  But for many others, some simple steps can ease the pain that must be endured to get your beautiful body art.  For instance, if you’re prone to fainting, bring a sugary snack with you which can help raise your blood sugar level and prevent you from hitting the floor.  It’s also a good idea to bring a book or ipod to distract you from what’s going on.  And I know that some of you won’t like this tip, but it’s recommended that you arrive sober or else you might get refused a tattoo.  The tips are easy and helpful and you can check out the entire article here.

Queen of Tattoos Creates Ink Concealer

Kat Von D Launches Tattoo Concealer At Sephora Stores

I’m guessing that no matter how much you love your body art, there are times when you want to hide it.  Whether it be from a potential employer or your boyfriend’s mother, hiding your tattoos just got a little easier than wearing a turtleneck in the summer.  Kat Von D of TLC’s show LA Ink has launched a tattoo concealer at Sephora stores according to People.com.  The product is waterproof and smudge-free and works pretty well according to the picture above.  But it’s quite surprising to me that she’d create a product to hide the thing that’s made her famous, but in a video on the site, she explains why.  Check out the article here.

Body Art Has Been Found On 5300 Year Old Tyrolean iceman

They call him Ötzi and he lived 5300 years ago.  I remember hearing about the discovery of his well-preserved body near the Italian-Austrian border in 1991.  Well, I just found an article at NewScientist.com that says Ötzi’s body has the world’s oldest tattoos and scientists say that they were etched in soot.  The body art, which is of crosses and bands of lines, is assumed to be for medicinal purposes as some were located near acupuncture points.  While it’s not certain, researchers think the “ink” might have been scraped from rocks around a fireplace, then injected by using thorns to pierce the skin.  It’s a cool article with a link to lots of pictures of the old guy.  Check it out here.

Engagement Tattoos

Music Bar Tattoos Replace Rings In This Engagement

I met Michelle when we were 14 and even back then I knew she wasn’t the typical girly girl who dreamed of white picket fences and a traditional white wedding.  So when she emailed me this week with the news that she and her boyfriend Ramses got engaged while on a trip to Spain, I wasn’t surprised that she didn’t mention a diamond from Tiffany’s.  In fact there was no diamond at all, but a body art image that represents a whole lot more.  Ramses is a musician…and a romantic who composed a piece for Michelle’s last birthday.  And in fact, that’s the song that is now tattooed on both of their backs symbolizing their commitment to each other.  The first 2 bars are on Michelle and bars 3 and 4 on Ramses.  I don’t think it can get more romantic than that.  While I won’t knock tradition, I absolutely think that a little creativity can make an engagement a lot more special.  Congratulations guys!  Check out Ramses’ website here

Life Saving Tattoo Artists!

Tattoo Artists Can Be The First Ones To Detect Skin Abnormalities

It seems kind of funny to call a tattoo artist a “life saver”, but in an article I just found at FrederickNewsPost.com, that’s exactly what it says.  Two dermatologists decided to educate tattoo artists and massage therapists on detecting serious skin issues like cancer because they work with bodies all the time.  It makes sense to me yet I never made that connection before.  I think this would work especially well for clients that regularly visit the same tattoo artist or therapist because the professional would get to know their clients’ bodies pretty well.  And even if it’s just a random walk-in looking for body art, I think it’s great if there’s knowledge on what a cancerous mole might look like.  While the article says that occasionally a client is caused “undue anxiety” when it’s suggested they see a doctor, most people are grateful for the recommendation.  It’s better to be safe than sorry.  Hmmm, I think I see a Super Hero Tattoo Artist comic book in the works.  Check out the entire article here

Old People Get Inked

World’s Most Tattooed Senior Woman in the Guinness Book

I just found a funny interview with celebrity interviewer Jancee Dunn.  In it she tells the story of how her 67-year-old mother, who wears pink cable-knit sweaters on a regular basis, announced at Thanksgiving dinner that she was getting a tattoo.  Dunn was shocked, just like I’d be if my own prim and proper mother said that to me.  However, Dunn supported her mom and even took her to the shop to get her body art…a shop she describes as dark with decor that included a brain in formaldehyde.  Now that’s my idea of a tattoo parlour!  The best part of the story is what design was chosen to be inked on Mother’s wrist…a raven.  Wow, mom’s got a wild side!  It’s a cool interview and even includes an excerpt from Dunn’s new book of essays called Why is My Mother Getting a Tattoo?  Check it out here.
