Body Art Has Been Found On 5300 Year Old Tyrolean iceman
They call him Ötzi and he lived 5300 years ago. I remember hearing about the discovery of his well-preserved body near the Italian-Austrian border in 1991. Well, I just found an article at NewScientist.com that says Ötzi’s body has the world’s oldest tattoos and scientists say that they were etched in soot. The body art, which is of crosses and bands of lines, is assumed to be for medicinal purposes as some were located near acupuncture points. While it’s not certain, researchers think the “ink” might have been scraped from rocks around a fireplace, then injected by using thorns to pierce the skin. It’s a cool article with a link to lots of pictures of the old guy. Check it out here.
